The Shadow King is a mutant with vast telepathic powers, able to read minds, communicate with others mentally, and project bolts of psionic force that can stun or cause severe psychic shock to an opponent's mind and can even cause physical injury or death. Amahl Farouk can engage in astral projection, causing his atral form to rise from his body. He can shift this astral form from this material dimension to an astral plane. Lacking a body of his own, the Shadow King is able to possess the bodies of others.

Farouk was the first person to become aware of Nate Grey, a telepath with power that rivaled that of Apocalypse. Each time Nate used his powers, the Shadow King was able to feel his power creating a ripple in the psionic plane like no other. Though he could not pinpoint the Nate's location, he was able to narrow it down to the Midwest region of America, enough information for Apocalypse assassin Domino to collect the telepath.

After the Shadow King followed Domino's futile efforts, he was sent to Avalon as a second wave for the Pale Riders, but arrived to find Avalon intact with the defection of Damask. It would be this turncoat that slayed the Shadow King after he took possession of Mystique's body. An enraged Nightcrawler devised a plan that pooled together his powers with those of Switchback to give Damask the opportunity to strike against Farouk.

Amahl Farouk was later seen inhabiting a different host body in Apocalypse's Citadel, the first to report the fall of the Southwest Kingdom. The Human High Council was successful in their pre-emptive nuclear strike on North America, launching their attack from within courtesy of a teleportational portal created by Gateway. Though many of his host bodies may have died during those aerial attacks, it is probable that the Shadow King remained alive in the Astral Plane.
