Mariko Yashida had always tried to serve the greater good. From an early age, she took every chance she could to sabotage of gang activities wherever she could, beginning with that of her own family. Her rebellious activities placed her in constant danger and this prompted her father to call in a favor from his old friend Logan to look out for her and give her some additional protection. Over time, Mariko grew fond of Logan and the two shared a brief romantic interlude before his business with her father concluded. It was perhaps his influence and advice for her to change the world from the top rather than persist meddling in the affairs of everyday Yakuza that led her to one day become a member of the Human High Council.

During the Human High Council's attempted pre-emptive strike on North America, Mariko was reunited with Logan and she brought up their past relationship, possibly trying to tell him that they had a daughter together. However, Logan was concerned with more pressing matters at the time and their conversation shifted instead to their attack on Apocalypse. Mariko displayed a heavy distrust in Brian Braddock and his intentions, intuition that would prove to be well-founded. After a failed sabotage, she would help direct the nuclear strike on Apocalypse with the assisstance of Gateway's powers of teleportation.

After the bombings of North America came to a close, Mariko returned to lead her clan after her father Shingen went missing. Currently, her people are helping to make a New Japan. Presumably, Mariko dispatched Psylocke to retrieve her half-brother the Silver Samurai for his assistance in building New Japan once she discovered he was working alongside the X-Men.

In our reality, Mariko was set to be married to Logan, the X-Man known as Wolverine, until he killed her father. She was later poisoned by blowfish toxin. To ease her pain, Mari pleaded with Logan who reluctantly released her from her suffering.
