Lila Cheney is a superhuman mutant with the ability to generate a teleportational field about herself with which she can transport herself and other people or objects across interstellar distances. However, she cannot teleport across shorter distances. Hence, if she were to teleport from one spot on Earth to another, she would need to teleport herself another point in the Galaxy and then teleport herself to the other point on Earth.

Lila was held at the Asylum during her childhood before Magneto rescued her. As an adult, she served as the human liaison for the modern day group of Robin Hood vandals known as the X-Ternals. She fell in love with the leader of this band of misfits, Gambit, from the moment they met and together they shared a romantic relationship. However, their rapport was always strained as Gambit was still secretly in love with Rogue. Lila always wondered just how much Gambit actually cared for her.

It was later revealed by Magneto that Lila was actually a mutant with a dormant power for teleportations across the entire universe. Using this power, Gambit and the X-Ternals were able to travel to another galaxy and retrieve the M'kraan Crystal, a gem containing the nexus of all realities. In exchange for a piece of the M'kraan Crystal, Gambit forfeited his unconditional love for Rogue and the shadow of his unfilfilled passion no longer casted a pall on their relationship. Lila would finally learn how much Gambit loved her when he chose to rescue Lila Cheney instead of recovering the crystal shard and a kidnapped Charles Lensherr from the X-Ternal turncoat Guido Carosella.

She was last seen at the X-Men's base in Westchester, New York and did not join them in their raid of Apocalypse's fortress. It is unknown what happened to Lila after the fall of Apocalypse and what became in her relationship with Gambit.
