Jonath was born of both Shi'ar and Mephistoid parents. He served in the Jath'che, an assassins' cadre devoted to the protection of the Shi'ar throne. When they failed to save the emporer from murder by his eldest children, D'ken and Deathbird, they were banished to the farming planet Ch'reesharaa. For life long soldiers to be forced to live the remainder of their days as farmers was thought to be severe punishment. However, D'ken and the Jath'che learned to live at peace in their exile.

When the Imperial Guard gave chase to the X-Ternals, Gambit and his party were forcefully whisked away to safety by the planet's vegetation. They were taken to Jonath who brought them up to speed on the status of the Shi'ar Empire, the abuse of the M'kraan Crystal by the Emporer D'ken, and the damaged Crystal's nullification of the universe. Jonath explained to them that the M'kraan had spoken to the planet Ch'reesharaa and the planet in turn spoke to his people relaying the message that the X-Ternals were destined to witness the end of all that is in order to prevent it from happening again. Immediately after this, the Imperial Guard bombarded the group as the M'kraan began to blink the planet and its inhabitants out of existence. During the fight, Jonath refused to engage in battle and chose to die not as he had lived, but as he had dreamed... as a man of peace.
