The vanguard of Apocalypse's army of tomorrow, these four presided over all that was under his dominion and together expurgated his empire of the genetically destitute. Using the prestige of their title, Apocalypse sought to use their great abilities to cultivate the power struggles which had arisen amongst them, to weed out the weak even among the strongest. At first Apocalypse had many lieutenants he called Horesemen. After taking over all of North America he announced the War of Secession, a battle between all of his Horsemen; he let it rage until only four Horsemen remained. The first lineup of the Horsemen seen by the public consisted of Sabretooth, Candra, Gideon, Death, and War. The majority of them were replaced in battles for succession. Others known to hold the mantle of Horseman include the Inhuman Maximus and Bastion.

In our reality, the Horsemen were named and given titles after the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse in Revelations, the last chapter of John: Famine, Pestilence, Death, and War. Unlike the Horsemen in the Age of Apocalypse, when a new Horseman was introduced, they typically took on the title of their predeceases. For example, there are multiple instances of people who served as a Horseman under the name Death including the original Archangel of Death, Caliban, and Wolverine.
