Havoc has the ability to absorb ambient cosmic energy into the cells of his body, transform it in an unknown manner, and release it as waves of energy that heat the air in their path enough to turn it into plasma. These waves will emanate from his body in all directions unless he purposefully tries to channel them in a single directions, usually along the length of his arms. The act of concentration involved in releasing his energy in anything other than an omnidirectional wave is physically exhausting for him if continued for an extended period of time.

Havoc and his brother Cyclops were raised by Sinister after they were orphaned when their parents died in a plane crash. The two were taken in by Sinister and raised as his sons, but Sinister was partial to the elder Summers. This nepotism would cause Havoc to be forever jealous of his over-performing sibling. The Summers Brothers would discover that their biological father was still alive and felt betrayed that Sinister had kept this from them. Sinister revealed that their actual father Christopher had been infected with a strain of unknown DNA that their father would identify as being from he extra terrestrial race of the Brood. Sinister tried to remove the alien DNA, but Summers escaped before he could finish the job.

His Brood persona taking complete control over his body which had begun to transmutate, Christopher lashed out at Havoc, forcing the elder Summers brother to kill his father and save his younger sibling. As the Summers brothers bid farewell to their father a second time, Havoc cursed his brother for taking away the only thing with meaning that he had left. He would have rather died by his father's hand that be saved by his brother. His bitter rage against Cyclops was exacerbated ten-fold.

Sick of always being in the shadow of his older brother, Havoc set out to prove that he was better than Cyclops. He was investigating the recent breakouts at the Breeding Pens when he discovered that it was his own brother betraying their high lord Apocalypse and used this piece of evidence to take command of the Elite Mutant Force and turn them against Cyclops, who he had imprisoned. With the help of Jean Grey, Cyclops was able to escape, but Havoc hunted them down, besting his brother in combat, and killed Jean Grey in the process. Though Havoc was elated at his victory over his cumbersome brother, his happiness was transient as Weapon X arrived moments later and slaughtered Havoc for murdering Jean.
