Carol Danvers was an Air Force Intelligence agent and a Space Agency Security Chief before she began work with the Human Defense League. She oversaw the protection of Gateway on Wundagore Mountain. When Altered Humans attacked, she was able to take out the cyborg Dead-Eye. Gateway was able to teleport her and Weapon X aboard Donald Pierce's assaulting aircraft where she would save Weapon X's life by tackling Pierce and blowing the two of them up with a grenade.

Pierce survived the explosion and infected Danvers with a techno-organic virus that made her an Altered Human as well. She fused with the remains of the cyborg Vultura and attacked the Human High Council's armada of ships alongside Pierce. The combination Danvers-Vultura hybrid made an attempt on the life of Weapon X, but hesitated when the Danvers personality was in slight control. During this pause of indecision, Pierce stabbed her in the back and took her out of comission.

In our reality, Carol Danvers entered the Air Force at an early age and rapidly rose to become one of the leading agents in military intelligence. Upon leaving her work as a spy, she became security chief at Cape Canaveral for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, where she met the Kree Captain Mar-Vell. During a battle between Mar-Vell and his Kree foe Yon-Rogg at a hidden Kree base on Earth, Carol Danvers was accidentally irradiated by the unknown energies of the Psyche-Magnitron, a device built by the Kree that augmented her entire genetic structure, giving her superhuman strength, the ability to fly and a clairvoyant seventh sense.

With these powers, she assumed the guise of Ms. Marvel and established herself as a champion of Earth until she lost all her abilities and memories a battle with the power-absorbing mutant named Rogue, leaving her with only her augmented genetic structure. Though her memories were restored by Professor Charles Xavier, he could not restore the emotional bonds linked to those memories. She was later abducted by the alien Brood and subjected to an evolutionary ray that triggered the latent potential of her augmented genes and thus became the cosmic-powered mutate named Binary. No longer feeling the strong emotional ties to people and places on Earth that she felt before falling victim to Rogue, Danvers decided to leave Earth and pursue adventure as a member of the Starjammers.
